A contact-continuum model for Neolithic and Bronze Age languages
Status of this document
This is a working theory, not an established conclusion. It proposes a research program for testing linguistic connections that may have been obscured by disciplinary boundaries, uncertain ancient vocalizations, inherited reconstructions, and the treatment of language families as more isolated than prehistoric population history now permits.
Individual observations in the Hieros Library differ greatly in evidential status. They must ultimately be marked as attested facts, established relationships, candidate connections, mnemonics, unresolved observations, or counterevidence.
1. Historical motivation
Ancient DNA has transformed our understanding of the Neolithic and Bronze Age.
The spread of agriculture into Europe was not merely the diffusion of an idea. It involved substantial migrations by farming populations originating in Anatolia and the Aegean. Several millennia later, migrations associated with steppe pastoralists again transformed the population of Europe. The populations from which the Yamnaya emerged were themselves formed through prolonged interaction among eastern European hunter-gatherers and groups carrying ancestry from the Caucasus and regions farther south.
These results replace an older picture of isolated prehistoric cultures with one of migration, admixture, trade, intermarriage, technological exchange, and repeated population transformation.
The language identities of many participating populations remain unknown. In particular, we do not know what languages the first Anatolian farmers spoke. It is therefore premature to identify them specifically as Semitic. Nevertheless, languages ancestral or related to later Afro-Asiatic and Indo-European branches could plausibly have existed in sustained geographical proximity.
The central historical premise of Hieros is consequently modest:
Neolithic and Bronze Age western Eurasia formed a long-lived interaction zone in which the ancestors of historically attested language families could exchange vocabulary, morphology, symbolic conventions, and writing technologies.
This premise does not prove a linguistic relationship. It makes renewed investigation reasonable.
2. The central hypothesis
The Hieros hypothesis proposes that the connections among Egyptian, Semitic, Indo-European, Anatolian, Mesopotamian, Caucasian, and other Eurasian languages were deeper and more extensive than standard family trees alone represent.
These connections may result from several overlapping processes:
- remote common inheritance;
- prehistoric borrowing and wanderwords;
- prolonged convergence within contact zones;
- the spread of technological and ritual vocabularies;
- the transmission of signs and phonetic values through writing systems;
- later reanalysis of inherited or borrowed material.
The theory does not initially require Egyptian, Semitic, and Indo-European to belong to one demonstrable genetic family. Its first testable claim is narrower:
Ancient western Eurasian languages contain structured cross-family lexical, grammatical, and graphic correspondences that occur more frequently, more systematically, and in longer sequences than chance resemblance should produce.
If this proposition survives controlled testing, the relative contributions of inheritance, contact, borrowing, and convergence can then be investigated.
3. The contact-continuum model
The conventional tree model remains useful for describing descent within established language families. Hieros proposes supplementing it with a network or flow model.
In this model, languages do not simply divide and then develop independently. Neighboring populations remain connected. Words, constructions, pronunciations, stories, technologies, and signs can move through the network at different rates.
Some vocabulary may travel especially far:
- boats, sails, wheels, metals, textiles, and agricultural products;
- footwear, containers, tools, weapons, and architectural forms;
- trade measurements, titles, institutions, and religious terminology;
- plants and commodities such as pomegranate, cannabis, cumin, and sesame;
- movement words used in migration, navigation, paths, rivers, and transport.
A word may cross several languages without any single community preserving its original form or meaning perfectly. It may also combine with native vocabulary, producing several related forms rather than one clean lineage.
4. The small-world proposition
Hieros adopts a “prehistoric small-world” proposition:
Once long-distance navigation, river transport, pastoral mobility, and interregional trade became established, independent local invention or isolated linguistic development should not automatically be assumed where a plausible transmission route exists.
Rivers and seas were not merely barriers. The Nile, Euphrates, Tigris, Black Sea, eastern Mediterranean, Persian Gulf, and connected overland corridors functioned as transport networks.
This does not mean that every similarity reflects transmission. It means that contact must be treated as a serious competing explanation rather than an exceptional last resort.
5. Lexical clusters rather than isolated word pairs
Hieros does not rest its case on occasional similar words. Short forms inevitably collide across languages.
The relevant unit is a structured cluster containing several of the following:
- a narrow shared meaning;
- multiple matching consonants in the same order;
- conservative identity correspondences;
- independently attested ancient forms;
- associated words in the same semantic field;
- plausible chronology and geography;
- parallel morphological developments;
- graphic or symbolic reinforcement.
Longer matches deserve more evidential weight than single-letter matches. A proposed pomegranate complex such as nurmû / nurimtu / nuranti / nur / rummān is intrinsically more informative than the observation that many water words contain n.
All known daughter-language forms should remain visible in the full table, because conventional reconstructions can be incomplete or mistaken. For statistical purposes, however, forms already belonging to one recognized cognate family must also be collapsed into a single independent observation.
The full table is the audit trail. The collapsed table is the statistical instrument.
6. Initial case studies
The foot and footwear complex
A large group of words for foot, leg, thigh, shoe, stepping, paths, and supports contains recurring P/B, P‑T/D, and S/Š‑P structures.
Recognized Indo-European forms such as Sanskrit pād-, Greek pod-, and Latin ped- constitute one inherited family, not several independent observations. They can nevertheless be compared with independently attested Anatolian, Semitic, Egyptian, Coptic, Mesopotamian, and Caucasian forms.
One possibility is a very remote relationship. Another is that a term associated with footwear, movement, measurement, or migration became a prehistoric wanderword.
The recurring initial s/š in some forms motivates a subsidiary “zapata hypothesis”: a mobile S/Š‑P‑T complex may have denoted feet, footwear, stepping, or locomotion. This remains a candidate requiring chronological and morphological testing.
The N-water complex
Egyptian 𓈖 is both a representation of a water ripple and a phonetic sign for n. Egyptian nwn denotes the primeval waters. Semitic languages preserve an n-h-r river family, while Indo-European and Indo-Aryan languages contain N-initial vocabulary involving Nile, navigation, wetness, flowing, ships.
A single n is not sufficient evidence of common origin. The significant observation is the conjunction of graphic, phonetic, grammatical, and semantic associations across several internally coherent families.
The working hypothesis is that these families may preserve an older areal association between N and water, flow, rivers, navigation, or interiority. Sound symbolism, sign transmission, contact, and inheritance remain competing explanations.
The KAR/KUR complex
A broad complex connects forms involving K/R, G/R, Ḫ/R, and related dorsal sounds with circles, curvature, baskets, rings, enclosures, settlements, bounded land, mountains, and turning.
The Egyptian sign 𓐍, conventionally valued as ḫ, depicts an uncertain circular object commonly identified as a placenta or sieve. Hieros proposes investigating whether its graphic form and dorsal value participate in the wider KAR/KUR complex.
The stronger proposed reading 𓐍 ≈ KR/ḪR must not be assumed in the core argument. It belongs to a later experimental layer and must be tested independently.
7. Writing as a transmission mechanism
Writing systems provide evidence distinct from ordinary vocabulary.
Related Aegean scripts demonstrably preserve similar signs and syllabic values across different languages. Mesopotamian, Anatolian, Egyptian, Aegean, Levantine, and later Persian systems also existed within connected cultural environments.
Hieros asks whether certain sign shapes, meanings, and values travelled across more than one conventionally recognized script family.
For example, PA-like and KA-like signs sometimes show combinations of:
- graphic similarity;
- related phonetic values;
- connected meanings;
- plausible historical transmission routes.
A visual resemblance alone proves little. A sign correspondence becomes stronger when shape, value, function, chronology, and geographical succession agree.
The possibility that a pictorial sign carried a sound value across languages also provides a mechanism by which writing could reinforce or reshape spoken vocabulary.
8. A conservative sound model
Hieros begins with the principle that the most likely sound correspondence is no change.
Identity receives the lowest cost. Simple, articulatorily plausible changes receive small costs. Multiple changes, reversals, insertions, deletions, and broad semantic shifts receive progressively larger penalties.
A proposed universal sound table should therefore be treated as a graph of possible transitions, not as a license to exchange every neighboring sound freely.
For example:
p → b → f → v → w → u
describes possible developments through voicing, frication, and weakening. It does not mean that all five sounds are automatically equivalent in every position and language.
The purpose of the sound model is to reduce interpretive freedom. Correspondences must be specified before the evidence is scored whenever possible.
9. Evidential classification
Every claim should eventually carry one of the following statuses:
· Attested— the form, reading, date, or meaning is documented fact.✓ = Established— the historical relationship is conventionally accepted.● ≈ ≃ Candidate— proposed (hypothetical or serious) relationship for testing.◇ ∼ Mnemonic— the resemblance is pedagogically useful but makes no historical claim.? ⇔ Unclassified— the observation is interesting but not yet understood or categorized.× ƒ ≠ Counterevidence— the information or connection is rejected, weakened or contradicted.
Sometimes mnemonic or unclassified words are also written in “special” «quotes» whereas normal “quotes” are confirmed established facts. .
Since most statuses concern two words, the relationship operators = ≃ ≈ ∼ ⇔ ≠ are usually used.

The unclassified case is often just written with a space, so two words next to another.

These markers should attach to individual claims, not merely entire articles. One article may legitimately contain all six categories.
10. Testing the hypothesis
The theory should be evaluated with predefined datasets and reproducible comparisons.
A pilot study could:
- select a fixed vocabulary of body parts, natural features, actions, technologies, and cultural objects;
- record each ancient form, date, source, meaning, and conventional etymology;
- collapse known daughter-language cognates for statistical counting;
- retain the complete uncollapsed table for auditing;
- define the sound-distance model before testing;
- score phonetic, semantic, chronological, and geographical fit;
- shuffle meanings within languages while preserving phoneme frequencies and word lengths;
- compare the observed clusters with thousands of randomized corpora;
- learn parameters from one part of the dataset;
- test whether they predict correspondences in previously unseen material.
The theory gains support if a compact model predicts held-out cross-family correspondences substantially better than matched random baselines.
It weakens if the apparent results depend mainly on:
- isolated short words;
- unrestricted sound substitutions;
- modern spellings;
- counting related daughter languages as independent;
- selecting only positive examples;
- flexible post-hoc meanings;
- disputed Egyptian readings required to make every comparison work.
11. What the theory does not claim
Hieros does not claim that every resemblance is a cognate.
It does not claim that genes determine languages, but has high correlation.
It does not require all compared languages to descend from one recent proto-language.
It does not reject established linguistic work wholesale.
It does claim that prehistoric contact was sufficiently extensive to justify reopening some questions, that uncertain vocalization warrants explicit alternative models, and that large structured collections of proposed correspondences should be evaluated quantitatively rather than dismissed or accepted impressionistically.
12. Research objective
The immediate objective is not to prove a universal macrofamily. It is to determine whether the Hieros collection contains a statistically exceptional signal after conventional cognates, known loans, selection effects, and chance resemblance have been controlled.
A successful result may first demonstrate an extensive prehistoric contact layer rather than common ancestry. That alone would be historically significant.
The broader question can remain open:
Do the observed correspondences arise from a network of Neolithic and Bronze Age wanderwords, from deeper relationships among language families, from the transmission of writing and symbolic systems—or from a combination of all three?
Hieros exists to organize the evidence well enough that this question can finally be tested.
